Diwali? Divali? Deepavali?
The Different Spellings of Diwali
There seems to be some confusion surrounding the actual spelling of Diwali. Part of the reason for this confusion may be due to the English translation, the many different languages and dialects spoken within India as well as someone's location in India. In the northern areas of India the festival is referred to as Diwali, while in the southern parts of the country it is called Deepavali.
In fact to someone not familiar with the Hindu "Festival of Lights" these different spellings might appear to be totally different holidays. So to help clear up some of the confusion we would like to present a number of the different spellings one might encounter.
One interesting explanation we found...
It is Dipawali. Dip means The Diva or Candle and Awali means Aagman(to come).
But whatever the spelling, rest assured that it is all the same joyous celebration!
